Membrane bioreactors (MBR) are used in wastewater treatment systems to improve footprint, effluent quality and  sludge thickening. They are also ideal for handling high or variable organic loading to a plant, such as in industrial wastewater treatment applications.

These systems can be  delivered as a site build, packaged plant or containerized plant. In a site assembly, biological and membrane system equipment are supplied loose shipped to be installed into concrete basins. There are also options available to employ steel tanks to supplement the biological treatment volume or as a membrane tank. This is more common in retrofit designs. Packaged plants may include everything from fine screening and equalization to disinfection and sludge handling and are built in steel tanks, shipped to site fully assembled. Containerized systems are fully enclosed and can protect equipment from harsh conditions or simply provide an aesthetically pleasing exterior.

H2O Innovation has 10+ years of experience building MBR  systems and  many of its employees have come from other OEMs and membrane companies involved in MBR design and fabrication who have over 20 years of experience.

flexMBR

Launched by H2O Innovation in 2015, the flexMBR™ is the first open-source membrane bioreactor design that can operate MBR modules from different suppliers. This pioneering technology provides flexibility to switch from one membrane to another without having to redesign the entire plant.

Our unique approach has allowed us to build MBRs with 5 of the leading membrane manufacturers, giving us an educated and unique perspective on both process and system design for your project. To date, we have built MBR facilities with hollow-fiber, flat-sheet polymeric and flat-sheet ceramic membranes.

By choosing the versatile flexMBR™ platform over a specific module design, MBR system owners have the flexibility to choose and change membranes. Replacement of modules becomes a competitive process that is also open to new module designs to be developed in the future.

The flexMBR™ platform enables owners to:
1) change membranes to increase surface area;
2) switch from flat-sheet to hollow fiber membranes;
3) apply it to new designs or retrofit applications; and
4) fight technical obsolescence.
